TWO MONTHS POST PARTUM

It feels like time goes extra fast the more kids you add to your household. This winter has been tough but time still feels like it is flying. We just celebrated Jackson's two months, which means I am also two months post partum. I just recently had my check up with my OB, and it was really bittersweet because it was the end of the road for us with him. Kyle and I both have grown to really love our OB, he has helped us through so much. If anyone is unfamiliar with our story, we struggled with infertility and loss for 2 years before finally having our little sticky baby (Everly). Our OB helped us manage and fix the issues we were having, and we were able to have two beautiful children. There were a lot of nights where I didn't think I would ever have a family and that was a really dark time in my life.

But here we are, two kids in, and it has been quite the adjustment. In some ways it hasn't been as hard as I thought, but I still haven't been brave enough to leave the house by myself with both of them lol I still either drop one off or have help come with me. I think once the weather gets nicer things will feel a lot easier, because right now it takes so much effort to leave the house and some days it just feels overwhelming. I feel like my attention has been focused solely on my kids, which is how I feel it should be. But sometimes things tend to fall short, like communicating with others via phone and text. I know this is just a transitional period and it will get easier as time goes on, I just wish others understood my availability can be patchy at times.

My healing this time around was completely different and I think that has contributed to my state of mind. I felt fairly normal pretty much the next day. I had bleeding of course, and I had pretty painful contractions when I nursed, but in terms of tearing I had nothing to worry about. I did have the baby blues again and that is one aspect that always turns me off of the entire child birth experience. I hate the way I feel, I hate crying every minute over nothing at all, and sometimes it feels like my mind is just showing me nothing but negative thoughts and it makes me feel so guilty. This time I had the baby blues for about a week, I think a lot of my anxiety and emotions were centred around Kyle going back to work and me being home alone. But by day 2 of him being back to work I found comfort in making our new daily schedule and finding our new normal. In terms of my emotional state this time, it is so much better. I was on anti depressants with Everly but this time I have not felt like I needed it. I feel so much more stable and confident this time around, and I'm thankful for that. Other than a few situations I am trying to work through in my personal life, everything has been manageable and we are getting really excited for warmer weather!

I am trying to get back into a low carb eating plan, not keto at this point because I don't think I can handle something so strict at the moment. I have also purchased a gym membership and have started going twice a week to start. It feels good to have the time to focus on myself and it has really helped my mental state also! I have about 30-40lbs I would like to lose, thats a combination of weight I gained while pregnant and some extra lbs I had before I got pregnant.

Overall I feel at peace with how my post partum healing has gone this time. I feel like I am in a much better place than I was with Everly which helps because now I have two kids I'm running after. The temperatures are starting to get nicer and I am ready to have tons of park and zoo dates with my kids!

LABOUR AND DELIVERY : JACKSON GRAHAM PAUL

Our perfect little boy is finally here! He arrived January 17, 2019 at 2:27am, and was 8lbs 9oz of pure perfection! I was 37 and a half weeks along and this little boy was ready to make his debut, and to be honest, I was so ready haha. If you have been following along throughout I'm sure you know that I was so ready to meet this sweet little face. From the very start this pregnancy was tough and a lot of the time it was scary, so to have him here in my arms is all I have been waiting for! I wanted to sit down and write out my birth story like I did for Everly before I forget it all, so here it is!

January 8 I went in for my weekly appointment, I was a little early to have a sweep done but I was having contractions and cramping so my doctor wanted to check me. I was 5cm dilated already, and it didn't really surprise me because I dilated like that with Everly too. So I was already half way there and I knew it was coming up and we would be meeting this little boy soon! I scheduled my next appointment for the following week (and I planned it later so I would for sure get a sweep lol) and carried on with our week.

January 15 I was feeling a little off, I was really tired and felt sick so I asked my mother in law to come and get Everly and have her spend the night there so I could rest a little bit and try and feel better. My doctor's appointment was the following day so the plan was to pick her up on my way home. January 16 I had my appointment first thing in the morning so I got up and left the house to go right there. I felt really nervous for this appointment, mostly because I knew I was already halfway there and I had been having anxiety for a while about labour. My doctor told me we could do a sweep and so I got up on the table and he gave me one. He told me I was about 6cm dilated and that he was pretty certain that I would have the baby within the next 24 hours. I was a bit skeptical about his statement because he said the same thing with Everly, and she ended up coming 4 days after. I scheduled my next appointment just in case Jackson was a no show, and I went to my mother in laws for a few hours to kill some time just in case things did start to happen.

My doctor told me that if I started having any types of contractions to go right to labour and delivery because I was already so far along. We live out of town so I wanted to stay close. I had to time it right because Kyle was also at work, and I didn't want him leaving unless things were actually happening.

My appointment was at 10am, and around 1pm I started feeling some cramping and light contractions. We started timing them just to see, but they would only happen when I was sitting down and they would stop when I walked around. I told Kyle to stay put, but maybe see if he could have an earlier day and leave around 3pm. Of course as soon as I said that my contractions stopped, and around 3:30pm I went and got something to eat because I was starving. Around 5pm we were still at my mother in laws, and we were making plans to head back to the house (we decided to let Everly stay one more night there just in case things picked up again), and my contractions started up again. This time they felt more intense, and they were about 4-5 minutes apart. We timed them for about 45 minutes and finally I said I wanted to go to the hospital to get checked.

They hooked me up to the machine and my contractions were actually about 2 minutes apart by that time, so they called the on call doctor in to take a look at our options. At that point, I was so far along that I felt the best option for us because we do live out of town was to break my water, admit me, and get things going. I have to take a moment and say how amazing our doctor was, we had Dr. Mckinney deliver our son and he just had an amazing bedside manor and humour that was so similar to ours. It was just such an amazing experience having him as our doctor, I was pretty bummed at first that we wouldn't have our doctor deliver, but I could not have asked for a better person to help bring our son into the world.

Once they got me into the birthing room, the doctor came in and told us that the man who delivers the epidural is tied up in a surgery and may not be able to come in time. I think at that moment the entire world stopped and part of me died inside lol. I have so much respect for women who can give birth naturally, I just know that isn't me. He said he would do his best and I started praying for a miracle. Turns out I dilate quickly but once my water breaks things slow right down, so even though they thought I wouldn't have any time, I did. Although, I had to wait about 3 hours before I was able to get the epidural, I was just thankful I could get it. I let him know about a million times how thankful I was too, because for those three hours I was experiencing back labour like I had with Everly and it is just another level of pain. The good news was that because I had been having back labour for three hours, my spine already felt numb and I didn't feel the needle to in which was one of the things I was really afraid of.

Once the epidural was in everything in the world was alright. I also made a point to push the button a lot more because with Everly by the time I was ready to push, the epidural wasn't as effective because I didn't push the button very much. This resulted in me being a little too numb (from the neck down lol) so they told me to stop pushing it so I could get some feeling back into the upper part of my body. I could feel the pressure starting to become more intense, and I knew that pushing was just around the corner.

When I reached 10cm like with Everly they let my body do a bit more work for about an hour before they told me to start pushing, just so he could squeeze his way down a bit more. I was really nervous and I was shaking a ton which made things a bit more difficult. I think I was scared of tearing, with Everly I ended up needing an episiotomy and the healing aspect of that was extremely hard. But I knew this baby needed to come out one way or another, so I started pushing.

So this is where I knew we had a doctor who was just hilarious: when the head was out and we were waiting for the next round of contractions to finish pushing, he saw Jackson had a head full of hair and while he was waiting he made a mohawk. His head just chilling there lol Kyle thought it was the funniest thing and it just made the room less tense (the pressure you feel is insane and you can't do anything until contractions start up again).

45 minutes of pushing and he was here, it was a moment I won't ever forget. I loved everything about this labour experience and honestly if they could all be like this I would have 20 more babies. The best part was I didn't tear. He gave me one stitch because I had a cut that was a little stubborn and wouldn't stop bleeding, but other than that everything was fine. With Everly, even though she was a vaginal birth it didn't seem like one because we were in an operating room in case they had to go in with an emergency c section. She was taken away and I didn't get to hold her for a little while until they knew she was alright. This was such a different experience, I literally pulled out my son. I got to hold him right away and I held him for almost an hour before they took him to weigh and measure.

The doctor afterwards even showed us the placenta and showed Kyle where Jackson had grown for the past 9 months. It was truly just a beautiful experience, one that I won't ever forget. The nurses we had in the room with us were amazing, the doctor was perfect, and the energy was just so happy and positive. I was so nervous leading up to that moment, but when it was all said and done I could not have asked for a better birth (even with the scare of possibly not having an epidural lol).

We are home and adjusting well, overall my post partum experience has been good and we are all settling in to our new routine!

POSTPARTUM CARE KIT

When I was pregnant with Everly I was so focused on the giving birth and taking care of her part, that I completely overlooked postpartum care. When I came home with her, she had everything she need (and then some) and I had absolutely nothing. Thank goodness for my mom, she was staying with us at the time to help with the transition, and once she found out I didn't have what I needed she ran out to the store to get me everything. If you haven't had a baby, I can't tell you how much the things she got helped me, if you have had a baby then you totally get it.

I had a vaginal birth with Everly so my postpartum care kit was and is tailored to that experience. With her I also had an episiotomy, and healing was a journey. I was stitched from end to end pretty much and everything I did was so painful. This time around I am making sure I have a list of everything I need and it is going to be home when I am.

My mom has been asking me what I would like for Christmas and there isn't really anything I need or want. HOWEVER, I had the brilliant idea of getting her to make me a "postpartum stocking" type thing. Is that not the most adulting gift you have ever heard haha. So I have made my Amazon list and here are all the things I'm including (besides the obvious like stool softner and tylenol):

1) Sitz Bath
I used this thing to DEATH when I had Everly. I think having an episiotomy was one of the reasons why it was so valuable in the healing process to me. I used it when I needed some relief and I also used it in between baths and to also clean, because you can't wipe or anything when you have that many stitches.

2) Witch Hazel Cleansing Pads
There are a few organic brands that carry these cleansing pads, but TUCKS also makes them and I prefer their brand. These are great at giving you that cooling effect "down there" when you need it, especially if you have stitches and they start to heal and get itchy. I found that's when I needed them to most.

3) Spray Bottle
The hospital usually gives you one of these to go home with, but Frida Baby also makes one called the Mom Washer. This is good because again, you can't wipe really with fresh stitches so they give you this to clean instead. It is an actual lifesaver.

4) Depends Overnight Underwear
This is a new one on the list. I have been watching a bunch of YouTube videos and tons of people recommend using Depends for right after you give birth. I have never thought to use them and it actually sounds like a genius idea. I am not a fan of the mesh type under wear they give you at the hospital so this sounds like a great alternative!

5) Always Overnight Pads
I used these last time with Everly and I actually prefer the Wal Mart brand of overnight pads because they aren't nearly as thick and bulky. I switch between pad sizes once the bleeding has started to subside.

6) Earth Mama Bottom Spray
I used this last time and really enjoyed it! It's pretty much a TUCKS pad but in liquid form.

7) Padcicyles
My friend made me a bunch for after I gave birth and they were AMAZING! So I am totally planning on making some this time around. It's basically a giant ice pack for down there haha, and it is heaven when you need it the most.

I think for now that is pretty much it! Doesn't child birth sound like so much fun?! The recovery depending on how your labour goes can be quick or it can be long and difficult. I felt like I would never be the same again, but day by day you get a little bit better and stronger and you do heal and become human again. I definitely recommend stocking up on some of these items if you are expecting, and if you have a friend who is due around Christmas or just after like I am, a great gift idea would be a postpartum stocking haha.

Is there anything I missed or something you couldn't live without?! Let me know! Those who have had C-Sections, is there a must have on your list?

TWO YEARS WITH EVERLY

I'm not even sure I want to be typing this out haha, I cannot wrap my brain around the fact that Everly is now two years old. She is fiercely independent and currently waiting to become a big sister. I was looking at some of her updates I wrote when she was 12 months and under and oh my heart! What a little ham she was, now she is her own person with her own schedule! We have come so far together and every day we learn something new about one another, here is a little update on Miss Everly:

Currently I think she is going through a developmental leap because a week before she turned two things went crazy real quick. All of a sudden she HATED the car, she would cry and it looked like she was scared to be in her car seat. After a lot of drives (my gas tank loved me that week..) and a few bribes we are back to a place where she can sit in her car seat and be happy again. That week was really hard because it felt like I would be stranded at home because it almost wasn't worth the effort to take her anywhere. I had never seen her act that way, and certainly not in the car. But I am glad she seems to be doing much better and she doesn't cry or squirm anymore.

Along with the car seat also came an insane sleep regression. She has been a terrific sleeper from the getgo, and I don't think I ever really appreciated that until now lol. She always went to bed when told and slept through the night. However a week before she turned two again things went into chaos. All of a sudden she was unable to go to bed by herself, she needed one of us to lay with her until she fell asleep (and if she woke up while we were sneaking out she would lose her mind). We have made slow progress I guess, because now she seems to be fine with us just sitting in a chair beside the bed, but when she wakes up between 11/12 at night she does not go back to sleep with us sitting with her. We started having to sleep with her in her bed, but now in order to save our backs and sanity we pull her into bed with us for the rest of the night. It is not a habit I enjoy, but after talking to Kyle we think it's best to just try and work through whatever she is going through with her instead of trying to fight her on it. Unlike the car situation, sleep is still ongoing :(

Her learning is on another level, I know it's typical for every parent to say their kid is a genius lol but I really think Everly is smarter than some kids her age. Every child develops differently and at different rates, and where Everly thrives in some areas she may lack in others. Her tacting is crazy, lately I have made more of an effort to sit and really listen to the items and things she tacts and I have no idea how she knows some of these things. She can also count to 10 and I think we are pretty close to showing signs of potty training (she always tells me she went to the bathroom after she went lol but she knows the difference). Her sentence structure has also improved, she usually talks using 3-4 word sentences and phrases. She also LOVES shapes, especially hearts, and loves identifying them whenever she can.

We are having a lot of issues with hitting which is pretty typical for her age, but what we have started doing is giving her one warning to stop and if she continues (which is 99.9% of the time) we bring her into our room and get down to her level and ask her why she thinks she is in here. We have started explaining to her that we do not treat others that way, and that hitting is not the right way to express your feelings. We then ask her to say sorry and she will usually follow it with a hug. We have to do this multiple times a day lol but afterwards I do see a difference in her attitude, even if it is short lived.

As far as toys and interests go she likes a little bit of everything. She loves trains, painting, colouring, and her dolls. She has also recently started playing with her kitchen more and cooking for us. She enjoys watching Elmo and Masha and Bear on t.v, and she likes watching "Super Simple Songs" on YouTube. She definitely enjoys being creative and it is fun to watch her explore that, especially since Kyle and I are both creative in different ways. We also just started a "morning box" with her this week, I plan on making a blog post about it later once we have done it for a little bit but so far she really enjoys it!

Her schedule before this sleep regression was as follows:

6:30-7:00am:
7:30: Breakfast
9:00: Snack
11:30: Lunch
12:00pm-2:30pm: Nap
2:45: Snack
6:00: Dinner
6:30-7:00: Bath/Bedtime rountine
7:00: Bedtime

As of right now it is kind of all over the place, if she does nap it is only for about an hour if that. So this week we are going to see how she does without napping. If she seems cranky I will bring her into our room and put a movie on for some quiet time. Part of me does feel like she is slowly weaning out her naps, I have always had a baby led schedule, she always shows me what she needs and it has always worked for us. So I am going to try it out and see how it goes, if it's a terrible idea we will just go back to naps!

Overall, Everly has grown and changed so much just in these last few weeks alone. She has such a crazy personality, it is definitely true what they say about two year olds! She is giving us a run for our money, but we have enjoyed watching her develop and turn into this little person.

YEAR IN REVIEW : 2017

I want to start by saying that looking back at this year I'm not really sure where it even went! Time is such a thief, and I can't believe that 2018 will be here this coming Monday and that I have been writing pieces of my life on this blog going on four years! Sometimes I am more active than others, but I love looking back and seeing where I was at during my marriage. Before I started writing this entry I went back and read my previous year in review posts and I couldn't help but smile during it all.

Sometimes it doesn't feel like we are progressing and that we are just staying in the same spot, but the good thing about documenting pieces of your life is that you are able to look back and see you were moving in a direction and things were changing even if it didn't seem like it at the time.

I really wanted to take the time to think about where I see myself this time next year, I have always been a goal oriented person, and I make goals for myself throughout not just for New Years. However, if I'm thinking about a bigger picture than New Years felt like the right time to really reflect and prepare myself to make changes for what is to come.

Last year I didn't really write about what I wanted to do and achieve, I mostly just reflected on the good things that happened and vowed to myself to be more present throughout my life. At that time I was really not thinking about myself and what I wanted, I was still a new mom and every moment of my day depended on Everly. I still live my days for my daughter don't get me wrong, but now that she is older and more independent I think I need to start looking after myself a bit more and figuring out what I would really like to do.

1. Hobby wise one thing I have always wanted to learn but never took the time was knitting (it is no secret I'm an 80 year old woman). This is something that I want to learn this year for sure, I want to take a class and really take the time to learn this skill. I was able to teach myself crochet this year and even though I haven't been able to do anything crazy, I have been able to relax and unwind with a crochet hook and some yarn.

2. I really want to focus more on my career and my workplace. Now that I have been back from maternity leave for almost five months now I really would like to explore more of the skills and techniques used in my day to day job, and just overall put the effort into moving forward.

3. I hate writing about this in a resolutions post but I will be getting back into the ketogenic lifestyle. It did wonders for me when I started in the summer and with all the craziness of going back to work and being on the road more I let it slip. However, I have invested in some cookbooks and started following some accounts for inspiration and help and I really think I can get back into it again.

4. My marriage really got thrown through the ringer this year. We had lots of challenges and at some points I truly didn't think we would make it through. However we were able to stick it out together and fight for each other and we are doing so much better. As wonderful as it is being new parents, it came with a whole set of challenges and we are learning everyday to work through them as a team instead of alone. I want to continue to have that understanding and work at strengthening our marriage further.

5. Lastly, this little space on the internet here. It will always hold a special place in my heart because some of my hopes, dreams, fears, and uncertainty's are on here. I never regret being open and honest, I like that I am able to look back and know that there are parts of my life that are raw and unfiltered. You may not have noticed a new name for my blog and a new look. I also am hoping to finally get rid of the .blogspot part and get my own domain.

The last few months of 2017 I really started investing in myself and my mental health. I didn't realize how far gone I was until I really started looking in the mirror and not being able to recognize myself. I have slowly been trying to fix that, and I am really happy with where it is going. I have been able to pull back from the things that used to get to me or drag me to a negative space. This includes events and also people, it is always interesting to see how toxic people can be in your life and using the techniques I'm learning I have found that in order for me to continue to have a healthy head space, I need to withdraw from people who are consistently negative and revisit them later.

2017 was a great year despite all the challenges, I loved celebrating our daughter's first birthday and growing closer to family and friends. I am excited and hopeful for 2018 and everything it holds for myself and my family. I truly hope everyone out there has a safe and happy 2018!

EVERLY'S FIRST BIRTHDAY

I don't think my heart has fully been able to accept that I am sitting here writing the blog post of my daughter's first birthday party. Even though her actual first birthday is September 11, we wanted to celebrate before all the back to school and end of summer madness. What a year it has been for my family and myself, I sometimes sit back and think about how far we have come in this whole journey in general. How just about two years ago we had no hope of starting a family, we weren't sure if it would ever happen for us and here we are - celebrating our daughter's first birthday. It took everything in me not to cry through her entire party, she is so loved by everyone in her life and that really showed this weekend. We had close friends and family on both Kyle's side and mine come together and spoil Everly with laughter and memories. It is truly one of those days I will never forget, 18 years from now when she wants nothing to do with us haha and I see these photos and videos I will always remember the feelings I felt celebrating with her.

Her theme was "Onederland," which was like a little floral oasis mixed with pinks and pastels, pretty much as girly as it gets. There was so much more I wanted to make for her party but overall I think it turned out really beautiful. The kids did a piñata which was fun to see the little ones try their hardest to break it. We filled it with small toys and some candy. The birthday favours were all personalized hand painted peg people, I figured instead of getting a bunch of small cheap plastic toys that people throw out anyways I would get something a little more special. We also had the most beautiful hand painted sugar cookies made by someone local to us, she had put water coloured flowers on them and they were so amazing, but at the same time way too beautiful to eat lol.

The weather was perfect, not too hot and not too cold. Overall the day went smoothly except for some minor teething pains (she popped another tooth that morning). We also had printed out some photos from her cake smash we did the weekend before. Those turned out so amazing, I styled the shoot and Kyle snapped away - reminded me of how much I loved working with him for photography. We decided to try a milk bath for her photos afterwards and it turned out perfect.

Happy First Birthday my sweet sweet girl!

KETOGENIC LIFESTYLE: TWO MONTHS IN

This will probably be my last update regarding the keto lifestyle because it is pretty repetitive at this point. It has been two months since I started eating this way and I have made some adjustments that are a better fit for me, but doesn't necessarily mean I fall under the "keto" category anymore.

I think in terms of being able to jumpstart better eating and weight loss, this was exactly what I needed. The scale wasn't moving no matter what methods I tried, and this was the first time I saw great results and it motivated me to continue. I'm no where near where I need to or want to be, but I am happy with working towards it slowly and safely.

Now, I tend to still stick to a low carb diet, I think that is my best bet. I was eating WAAY more carbs than I thought, and it was not doing me any favours. My body hasn't gone into ketosis in a while but I know that if I want to kick start a good burn having my body go into ketosis is the way to go. I know I am human and I get cravings and life happens so I have learned to just have things in moderation, something I was not doing before. I also learned the relationship I had with food, like many people it became a crutch. When I was stressed or upset I just ate; something that also was not doing me any favours. I see food differently, which sounds so strange to say but I have better outlets when I am stressed or upset.

I know that to be at a good weight that I am happy with, I would like to lose another 30lbs. Today, I have lost a total of 26lbs. Something I have a hard time wrapping my head around, but it took a lot of hard work to get here. I have no intentions of going back to the weight I was. I also want to be at a healthy weight for when we want to start trying again, which won't be for a little bit but I want to give myself time to get there.

Life right now is a bit chaotic, and it has been hard not to slip into this hole I usually slip into. But Everly helps a lot, she keeps me busy and she keeps my heart happy. I plan to continue limiting my carb intake, and working towards being a much healthier version of myself.

WHAT'S NEXT?

Ahh that million dollar question I have been getting non stop for the last month. As I prepare to go back to work (insert crying eyes here), people have been wondering what comes next. I like to consider myself a serious planner, even though things may not always happen in the time frame I would like them to, I have it all planned out. For the first time in a long time, I've got nothing! Sorry to disappoint you, but this is the one question I honestly do not know how to answer!

What I do know is that in a couple weeks I am back to work full time and Everly is going to daycare. This alone is breaking my heart. As much as I know it will be good for her to make friends and all that jazz, it has been her and I everyday for the last year. We will adjust as time goes on, but this transition time is going to be hard for me.

More babies? Maybe. I say maybe but my heart is screaming YES OF COURSE. Right now I am continuing to work on myself (I have one last follow up blog post coming about eating keto), and just enjoying our daughter. Everly is 98% of my time and energy and I love that. So I know my heart isn't ready to split time. I am just open to whatever happens, I want to do it right if possible in the sense that I would like to go back to my OB and have him see where I am at in terms of hormones and levels. It has been so long I have no idea where I stand, which is scary too. Putting myself back into a place where I am vulnerable again is really scary. Going through our trials of getting pregnant feels like another lifetime ago, which is both good and bad. I have no idea where I'm at and the thought of possibly having to experience more losses is something my heart can't handle.

I get really nostalgic when life changes are about to happen. Like right now, I think back to last year when I was about 31 weeks pregnant. I felt like I had all this time and that a year is so long.. but it's not. It goes by in lightning speed. I saw the tv show I was watching the night my water broke, and I couldn't help but get emotional over that!

Writing more? I hope so! Time will be a little few and far between once I am working again. But I know for sure I want to write about Everly, I love being able to look back on pregnancy and early moments.

Right now I am trying to just ride the wave and see where it takes me. So far it has been bumpy but rewarding. We shall see what happens, I'll try to keep you posted!

KETOGENIC WAY OF LIFE : ONE MONTH LATER

It has been just over a month since I started eating a ketogenic based diet, and even though there have been a few times where I ate something that would throw my body out of ketosis, I have been pretty dedicated to eating this way. Overall, I feel really good! I don't feel deprived like I thought I would, and I feel like I have way more energy.

I have made a point to stay within 25 net carbs a day and it has not been as hard as I thought it would be, I have a meal plan that has been set and it is something that I am happy with. I also don't beat myself up if I eat something that will throw me off because that is life!

The black and white photo was taken about a week before I started and it is me at my heaviest. Having a baby is the most magical experience and I loved being pregnant, but the aftermath has been really challenging. I knew it would be hard for me to lose the baby weight but I didn't think it would be this challenging. The one on the right was this past weekend. I always find the best way to tell weight loss is through progress pictures, for a while even though my body felt better (which was great!) I was hoping to look different too. I didn't think I looked very different until I saw these two photos. I can definitely see a difference especially in my face and it gives me the motivation to keep going.

My nurse practitioner explained that a ketogenic diet can be controversial to some nutritionists, but it has been the only thing that has worked for my body. This way of life is recommended for diabetics and people who have PCOS like myself. For the first time in a long time I am working WITH my body instead of against it.

Since starting this (which will now be my way of life forever and I'm okay with that) I have lost 18lbs. I am unsure of inches I never measured and I wish I did. I know that it is not always about a number but more how you feel, and I agree, but it is nice to see that number go down because I was at a place where I was not healthy. I am glad I made the choice to do this because I wanted my body to be in its best shape to hopefully carry another baby in the future. Being the weight I was at would not have been healthy to get pregnant. I essentially weighed the same amount when I started as I did when I was 9 months pregnant and I just wasn't having it anymore.

Overall, it has been a great learning experience for me and it has shown me a lot about the amount of carbs I was putting into my body. Now I focus more on the healthy carbs found in veggies and fruit as opposed to the unhealthy carbs I was shovelling into my mouth before.

NINE MONTHS WITH EVERLY

These pictures were SO hard to get, which is why they look so crummy. She is such a wiggle worm! Everly this month is 9 months old and I have been so upset this month about it because I only have 2 months left with her before I return to work. That came up in the blink of an eye, I was looking through photos of when we first brought her home and it seems like another lifetime ago, but it also feels like yesterday. I am slowly starting to understand why people have more babies!

I think recently she started teething again, and this time it has been a lot harder on her and has really taken a toll on her mood. She is more whiney and less happy go lucky like she normally is. She pretty much eats whatever we eat now, and she has slowly started crawling! She isn't super fast at it just yet, but she also has started pulling herself up onto pretty much anything but her favourite thing is to climb Kyle and I like a jungle gym.

I took her for a doctor appointment this week and she is hitting all her milestones and she currently weighs 25lbs and is 30 inches long. She wears size 4 diapers (although I think she is almost ready for size 5!) and wears size 18-24 month clothing. I wish I was joking, but this little lady is long just like her daddy. She loves playing peek a boo but her favourite thing is to give us kisses, they are open mouth, slobbery, adorable kisses and I love when she does it.

She really does not like getting dressed/undressed/or having her diaper changed. It is the biggest struggle! But she loves her water table, swimming, the park, and her smart trike. This month we also took her to Marineland and she LOVED it. This weekend is Kyle's first Father's Day and we have been surprising him everyday with small little gifts made by Everly.

Everyday she has such a spunky personality, I see myself and Kyle in her but I also see a person forming that is all her own. She is so perfect and beautiful, I have loved every minute of being her momma!

KETOGENIC WAY OF LIFE : WEEK ONE

Boy oh boy, I thought I've experienced hard things before but not eating any kinds of carbs or processed sugar has been a whole other experience. Let's start at the beginning..

It's been really challenging losing the baby weight, harder than I thought it would be and that had really got me down and discouraged. I really hated looking at myself in the mirror and I kept having to buy new clothes at big sizes because I just wasn't fitting into what I could wear before. I was trying to change the way I was eating and nothing was working, the scale was staying put which was pretty discouraging too. It was basically this back and forth battle with myself and I could feel my personality just dwindling.

In March, my mom came home from Florida and started this new lifestyle because she is diabetic and has been wanting to get herself off insulin. She said she was starting a "ketogenic" way of eating and it was something I had never heard of before. After her first week she lost just over 10lbs, and has since lost almost 30lbs after starting! (YAY MOM!)

For the first couple months of her doing it she was giving me tips and telling me to try it out because it is recommended for people who has PCOS, and I kept telling her that I "didn't eat that many carbs so it didn't matter." Finally last week something switched and I really paid attention to what I was eating and the labels on the food and it turns out I was powered by carbs.

After a couple days of research I started and in the first day I lost 5lbs. When I stepped on the scale the next day I was floored. Granted, a lot of that was probably water weight but just seeing the scale finally go down was really motivating.

The first 4 days were the hardest for sure, your body is wondering where the hell your processed food is and I got the keto flu as they call it. I felt so tired, moody, headaches, and all I wanted was to swim in a pool of bread. If you can push past the first couple days I promise you do wake up feeling normal again.

The picture above was the first day I woke up and felt good, I felt human and my body didn't feel tired or "blah." Finding things to eat is sometimes a challenge, but I am glad I have my mom to ask questions with and to help push me through the hard spot. I definitely would have caved a lot earlier if it wasn't for her and I'm glad I pushed through the hard part because I feel really awesome.

So far for progress, after one week of having a ketogenic diet I have lost 8lbs total! Which is so crazy to me but I'm pretty impressed and happy so far with the results I have had. I plan on doing updates here and there as time goes on!

WHAT I SAID I WOULD NEVER DO AS A PARENT

I have wanted to do this post for a while, mostly because looking back I think it is kind of funny to see how things come full circle. Some of the things I swore I would NEVER do as a parent I find myself doing, and I can't believe I essentially mom shamed some people based on some of the choices I now make myself as a mom.

1. The Schedule
This is probably this biggest thing I swore I would never do. I remember my mom swearing up and down how much being on a schedule helped us growing up, but I would always say "I could never live everyday the same way." I even had a friend with a kid a couple years ago say we had to hang out before her kid went down for a nap and I remember thinking "why can't you go off schedule for ONE day?!"

Hey past Kayla, meet mom Kayla - the mom who literally NEVER goes off schedule. The schedule is everything and I'm okay with that. Sure it's pretty strict now but I know as time goes on it will ease up. I always sit and smile almost every day I put her down for her nap at the same time because I never thought I would be the mom to have their child on a schedule. I love that we have our days planned and there is structure in her life, looking at how much it has helped her I honestly do not think we could ever have a day where things are just anarchy.

2. The Unsolicited Advice
This one was another big one, I remember always saying to people who had kids "well why can't you just do _____." This is one of my biggest pet peeves because I consider myself to be a pretty hands on mom and Everly is always my main priority, unless I approach you with a question or concern please keep your opinions and thoughts to yourself.

I have already gotten my fair share of unsolicited advice and I can see now that I'm a mom how annoying it is to have to listen to it.

3. Stating the Obvious
This kind of goes hand in hand with unsolicited advice but another thing that really grinds my gears is hearing people state the obvious to be regarding my daughter. Again, Everly is always my main priority.. trust me when I say I'm handling it. I don't need to hear "keep an eye out on ___" or "her face has ____" "she has diaper rash." No shit. I've got it.

I can remember saying the obvious to so many people who are moms and now in my head I'm just like "Kayla why?!" It makes it seem like I go every day not looking at my child - I see every mark on her and I'm taking care of it.

4. Parenting My Kid For Me
For all the times someone has given a child a piece of food or let them do something their parents said they couldn't have - there's a special place for you. I have been guilty of doing this in the past and never again will I be guilty of this. We had just started giving Everly solids and someone went to give her something she had first of all never tried, and something I knew she was not ready for. I said no don't give that to her and they continued to do it until I had to raise my voice and say NO. Why did it have to go that far? Who are you to think it is ok to continue to do something the mother says is not ok?

All of these things I am guilty of doing but will never do again. You never know what something is like until you're in it. This post seems a little passive aggressive now that I am reading it back, it is not meant to be. It is just a reminder for myself going forward, I find it interesting that people are so quick to point things out to the mom and mom shame, but never throw anything back at the father. Are there things on this list you were guilty of doing before you became a mom? Did I miss anything? Let me know in the comments!

POST PARTUM DEPRESSION: MY EXPERIENCE

Recently I have found out that the month of May is going to start bringing awareness to Post Partum Depression and I think it is a great idea. Much like the subject of miscarriage or depression in general the subject is often avoided or overlooked by a lot of society and I think that is really unfortunate. It breaks my heart that many people close to me have experienced this feeling and have felt embarrassed to share their story. I have been pretty open about my struggles whether it is with infertility or with depression and I do not regret it for a minute because it has opened up a whole new conversation with some of my closest friends and as a result it has made us stronger together. This has been my experience with PPD.

You hear about it when you take the classes or when you read the books, I have always struggled with some form of anxiety or depression on and off my entire life which made me pay closer attention to the subject when it was discussed, but I was still naive. You think you're ready for this amazing little human but you're not at all. Suddenly you're at the hospital with a whirlwind of visitors and your body is slowly going back to "normal." I thought to myself in the hospital (day 2 of being a mom) "oh awesome I must be one of the lucky ones who didn't get depression or baby blues!" Then I got home and reality sunk in and suddenly I was hit with the baby blues. This lasted two weeks and the first couple months in general were a blur but basically it felt like even though I had people visiting I still felt alone. I cried at the drop of a hat and had no idea why, I was struggling emotionally with every choice I made. I remember one time crying because I didn't know what to make myself for lunch, and because I couldn't come to a decision I didn't eat lunch. Those two weeks were a struggle and sometimes I wondered how people could live like this for extended periods of time, I prayed that the feeling would go away. The feeling did disappear for a little while, I finally started feeling like myself again and that was really awesome. Then January hit, and the feeling of depression came back and I was devastated. I remember crying to Kyle, I kept saying "I don't understand why it was gone and then now it's back." I think a combination of hormones being out of control and personal issues I was dealing with at the time made things unfold the way they did, and it's something I'm still working on today.

It's not her it's me, and it's a daily struggle because I feel guilty when I have bad days because I want her to see the best version of myself all the time. My love for her is undeniable, I would give my life for her at the drop of a hat. Unfortunately PPD make some days really hard, but overall I can feel myself getting better. The thing with PPD is that it doesn't care whether you have all the help in the world or not, I have a husband who is the most hands on father, he adores his daughter and is always available for help and I have my family who has displayed such amazing unconditional love for her. As hard as it has been dealing with this form of PPD, I do recognize that there are people who suffer to a much stronger degree, and my heart aches for those people because I know how hard this feeling is I could not imagine feeling worse.

Being a mom is the biggest blessing, this is what I wished for, I would not trade any aspect of my life for anything. She is the reason I wake up every single morning determined to have a good day, and she doesn't determine whether my day is easy or hard, it's my hormones. I find that social media can often times be detrimental because a lot of people only show the parts of their life that are put together which sometimes makes me doubt my ability to parent. But something I keep telling myself is everyone has bad days, no matter what they post or what you see. There are days that are hard for everyone because we are all human, and we are all figuring this new job out.

I feel truly thankful I have been able to confide in a few friends about my experience, and to be reassured that it is OK to feel this way. You are not a bad mom or person for feeling this but it is important that if you are, you seek help or find support. I am glad I was able to recognize my feelings and work at changing them before they ultimately got worse. Never let anyone try and guilt you into how you're feeling or make you feel worse, one thing I tell myself at the end of every day is that I am doing a good job, I am a great mother, Everly is healthy and thriving and she loves me. Telling myself those things have helped get me through some tough days, and I am passing them on to all of you <3

SIX MONTHS POSTPARTUM

Ahh here we are, six months postpartum! My maternity leave is half over and it's scary to think just how fast the last half will actually go. I wanted to write a little bit about how I'm doing since a LOT has changed since my one month post partum post (you can read that here if you are interested!)

The first couple months were hard and they were also a blur. I wish I wrote more about it because you're in survival mode pretty much, learning everything for the first time and when time passes you forget pretty much everything. She is a completely different baby now which is understandable, she has figured out a little more about the world and about who we are, her features have changed so much, and overall her personality is just shinning through. She is currently going bananas in her exersaucer which has given me a few extra minutes to talk a little bit about myself and how I've been feeling now that it has been half a year.

I talked a little bit about the baby blues in my one month update, and part of me was worried it would stem into something more but thankfully it went away after about 2 weeks. That was hard and to be honest it is one of the things that really deter me from having another baby down the road. I had an amazing support system that helped me daily, helping me through my emotions and I spent so much time trying to dismiss how I was feeling that I never took a moment to accept the fact that yes I gave birth to a human so my hormones naturally would be all over the place. I think if I accepted my feelings things would have turned out better. Now my emotions are a lot better, I enjoy being a mom and I enjoy my life with her. There are definitely days where I have a good cry with my coffee as she naps, but I take those days as they come.

I have fully healed and have been healed since my check up at is it 6 or 8 weeks? One of those. I also have my cycle back and have had it since November. For someone who never had a regular cycle I am shocked that it has come every month on time. One thing that has been a real struggle is weight loss, I gained about 50lbs during my pregnancy and have only lost about 10lbs of that. It has been the hardest for me to accept, and I have been making more of an effort to eat better and also get out more now that the weather is a bit nicer. I knew it would be tricky to lose that weight but I didn't think it would be this hard. So I keep trucking on and I have made it a goal of mine to really focus on it now and as the weather gets warmer to be active with Everly. My weight has always fluctuated, but this is the heaviest I have ever been and I hate it.

I also wrote about having side effects from the epidural, that stopped a couple weeks after I wrote about it and I'm so happy it did! I can still feel the odd stiffness in my back, but the pain has completely gone.

It has been a crazy 6 months, and it has been life changing seeing Everly experience everything like first holidays. She is an amazing little girl, next week I will be writing about her 6 month update and get a little more in depth about what she's learning and the milestones she has. She has made me into a different person, I am more accepting and patient, but I also realized I have no time for people who do not make the time for me - which unfortunately has led to lost friendships but that's life.

I cannot wait until the summer time when we can go on more adventures and not be house bound for most of the week. There will also be her first birthday at the end of the summer as well which is nuts to think about! This will probably be the last "post partum" type update I will do, I might do one at a year but in terms of after baby and recovering I have pretty much done all of that, it is just a matter of getting myself back into the shape I was in before!

THE LITTLE THINGS

Being a mom has been one of the most rewarding things I have experienced so far, but it's funny how some days I feel like I can do it all and other days I have crazy mom guilt. It is such a fine line between balancing spending time with the kids and making time for yourself so you can be the best version of yourself FOR your kids! I want to spend every minute with Everly, and I feel so guilty when something takes me away from her. It's challenging to accept that sometimes it is OK to have a night away, that I'm not a bad mom for taking a couple hours to myself because whenever I come back I appreciate the little things that much more! At the end of the day, I have found it hard not to question everything I'm doing as a parent, and it's even harder with things like social media. So many people get mom shamed and it makes me so sad because we are all doing our best. If someone gets a sitter for the night and hangs out with some friends that is ok! If someone needs to take an hour to run some errands and just regroup that's ok too! You're not a bad mom for taking a moment for yourself. It helps me reflect on being a mom and ways I can be better for my daughter and when I come back she gets the very best version of me.

I have been loving watching her learn all of these new things, it feels like everyday she is learning something new. I find myself taking constant videos and photos to document her life, one thing I never had was videos of myself as a baby/kid so I almost feel the need to overcompensate for Everly. I always saw myself as an sentimental person, but ever since I had a baby it has reached a whole new level and I find myself soaking in every little thing she does.

We are almost at half a year old and it feels so bittersweet, on one hand it feels like it has gone by in the blink of an eye and in the other it feels like she has been with us my whole life. I can't believe my maternity leave is half over, knowing I will be going back to work also makes me enjoy the little things a lot more because I know pretty soon I will be apart from her for 8 hours a day.

This weekend we really took it easy, a lot of the time we are out and about but this weekend we dialed it down and spent some home time as a family and it was wonderful. We played on the floor (she is SO close to crawling!), organized the house, and I started making puree for Everly. These are the types of weekends I will always look back on and smile because it is the 4 of us in our element spending time together away from all the craziness.

I hope everyone is able to take time out and enjoy the little things, whatever they may be!

WEEKEND ROUNDUP: FAMILY DAY EDITION

This past weekend we celebrated Family Day - our first one as a family of three! The weather was absolutely beautiful for Canada in mid February, blue skies and over 0 all weekend! We kept it pretty low key but also made it a point to visit local family. Here are a few pictures of how we spent the weekend!

Now that Everly is in a convertible car seat we don't have anything to block the sun in her eyes, and the window coverings just don't cut it so I brought out a pair of her sunglasses and they seem to help a bit more! I just can't with her, she is too cute!

We took advantage of the weather and went for a family walk and brought our dog along too who you can't see because he's running waaaay ahead because he loves the outdoors. Everly wasn't the biggest fan of our walk, she buried pretty deep inside my carrier but it was nice to get out and give her some fresh air!

Kyle and I managed to go on a little day date, we were supposed to go to Casa Loma but the line up was 2 blocks (not even exaggerating a little), so we thought we would go to the CN tower, but there was NO parking left. So our last idea was to go to Dave and Busters and then go out for dinner which is what we ended up doing! My pizza was amazing, we love going to Pie!

Everly and I spent the afternoon on Friday hanging with Weston who is her cousin! They don't really see each other very often so it was so cute seeing them interact, he is so helpful with her! He was feeding her and giving her toys, even though in the photo he doesn't look too happy ha he was excited to help her and play with her.

All in all it was a really great weekend spent as a family and it just reminds me more and more how happy and full my heart is and I love experiencing events and life in general through Everly's eyes.

I hope all my Canadian friends had a great Family Day weekend as well!

THINGS THAT MAKE MOMMY-ING EASIER

I am the first to admit when I have a problem, ever since finding out I was having a girl I knew I'd be a goner. Everything is so damn cute and I have zero self control when it comes to packaging and cute things. HOWEVER, there are some essentials I have found that have made being Everly's mom a little easier (other than the obvious items like a crib/car seat).

1. The Diaper Bag
I am a total diaper bag mom, that thing comes with me everywhere! Looking back I feel like I researched a diaper bag more intensely than I researched universities ha but I knew what I wanted and I hit the ground running. I knew I wanted something that didn't look like a diaper bag because it was something I knew my husband would carry as well as myself. For the last six months we have been using a diaper bag from Timi and Leslie and I love it! It has been the perfect size for what we have needed it for. Recently however I just purchased a diaper bag backpack and I'm waiting on that to come in the mail. Now that Evie is in a convertible carseat I needed my hands free, and once the spring and summer get here we will be doing a lot more day trips. I would highly recommend a backpack diaper bag if you're like me and tote it around everywhere - I can't wait to start using it!

2. The Wrap/Carrier
Surprisingly this was an item I didn't really research all that much and it's partly because people who use a specific brand of carriers/wraps are pretty intense and loyal to their brand so it was hard to really grasp what would work and what wouldn't. I knew ultimately that I would want something easy and quick, and I stumbled upon a Baby Hawk carrier that The Happy Baby carried, tried it on, and was absolutely hooked. I love the cute pattern also (again..the packaging!) and Everly honestly loves being inside it which helps too. I believe we paid $126 for it, so in terms of carriers it's pretty average priced.

3. The Sweedish Bed
This makeshift Dock a Tot bed was essential for the transition from co sleeping to crib. I have written about how our schedule is baby led, and one of the things we really followed was when we thought she was ready to sleep in her crib. This is a subject like so many other parenting things that is completely subjective and everyone has their own opinions about it, I'm only writing about what has worked for Everly. I had watched a lot of reviews about a Dock a Tot and really wanted one, however the price tag was something I wasn't really into. I came across a lady locally who made these and scooped it up! Honestly I'm so happy I did, like I said transitioning her to a crib was seamless because of this bed and it is something she still uses when we are down at my parent's house.

4. The Owlet
My mom was really generous and gifted us with the Owlet, and an like many other products this comes with mixed reviews. Some say that it does more harm than good, others swear by it. In our case, we really swore by this - especially when she was no longer in the same room as us. We had a rocky start at first with it because we kept putting it on too loose, but now it is a staple and really provides us with peace of mind especially being new parents.

5. The Playard
I bought this teepee playard the day before I gave birth to her and I love it because it will grow with her, we can take out the toys when she gets bigger and she can use it as a reading tent or fort. She loves this right now, we added her lamb mat to make it a bit easier for her to reach the toys and it is one of the only things that she enjoys for an extended period of time. What began as a purchase based solely on packaging has grown to be something we could not live without.

6. The Cart Cover
My last most used item that has made mommy-ing easier is the carseat cover! Now that Everly is in a convertible carseat we use it as a store cart cover. The floral one pictured is from Covered Goods and we also were gifted a Milk Snob cover and both are amazing. It helped a lot when she was just a newborn and we took her out in public, it gave her the privacy and coverage so that strangers didn't spread their germs and take a peak. There are tons of multi use covers on the market now, but my favourites are both Covered Goods and Milk Snob. It took all I had not to purchase every floral pattern that Milk Snob carried!
